At the outset, you and your fellow explorers dare to venture into the accursed abode. You traverse its shadowy halls, with each step echoing like the ghostly footsteps of those who came before.

For example, if a player suffers three speed damage, they will need to move the arrow on their character card down three spaces - this may also reduce their movement. If any of a player’s traits are reduced to the skull icon on their character card, they die. Some cards allow players to attack using a different trait or to attack from a distance. I'd say that the reworked version's cards are also more handsome. Besides fresh illustrations and slightly larger font, card backgrounds now carry a design like the wallpaper found in Disney's Haunted Mansion ride. 'Decaying grandeur' is definitely the theme this time around, and that's a nice contrast to the grungy feel of the last edition. In a cool twist, you won't ever know what that 'something' is before it appears.

If you fail the roll, you can't cross the barrier, though you can still move back the way you came. Many room tiles have rules printed on them, but some of them also have special rules, listed here. Follow its instructions, which may require you to attempt rolls. Then discard the card unless it says otherwise or has an ongoing effect. When your explorer enters a doorway, and there isn't a room on the other side, look at the top tile on the room stack. If it has the name of the floor you are on (ground floor, basement, or upper floor), turn it over and connect it to the doorway you just entered.
However, if the defending player rolls higher, then they do damage to the attacking player. In the result of a draw, neither player takes any damage. Each of the heroes take their turns starting with the hero on the traitor’s left and moving in a clockwise fashion. The same rules from the exploration phase still apply to all players, except you no longer need to perform a haunt roll after drawing an Omen card. They can do the same things they did before the haunt was revealed, except they don't have to attempt further haunt rolls (even if one of them gets an omen card). The traitor has to tell the heroes what he or she is doing each turn, but not why; the same condition applies to the heroes.
If anything, it makes for a more streamlined approach with less stress; you won't be struggling to find the tiny tokens you need from a sea of others in 3rd edition. Because each room is revealed at random, you're getting a different layout every time you play. Throw in narrative descriptions bookending your story and you end up with one of the more immersive experiences this side of the best tabletop RPGs.

The objective of the game varies depending on the scenario, but generally, players aim to survive the haunted mansion’s dangers and escape, unless you end up as the traitor of course.
